Red Meat helps boosting a food poison Germ

Tags: , ,

Red MeatDairy products scientists say that they have found a bacterium that become the cause of food poisoning by targeting a non-human molecule that can be absorbed into the body through red meat.

A potent bacterial toxin known as Subtilase cytotoxin is produced by some kinds of E. coli bacteria that targets on human cells with a non-human cellular molecule on their surface. It seems that N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) is one of its favorite targets. N-glycolylneuraminic acid is a type of glycan or sugar molecule and its high levels are found in red meat and dairy products.

Subtilase cytotxin leads to bloody diarrhea and can become the cause of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) that is a potentially fatal disease.

The study has been published online in the journal Nature Oct. 29 issue.

HIV positive and Aids- Comprehensive Analysis

Aids1It is surprising that even though HIV/AIDS happens to be one of the most alarming causes for untimely death, only a select few are appropriately enlightened about it. To begin with, HIV (the abbreviated version of human immunodeficiency virus) is the infection or the virus, to say it more correctly, that is regarded as the root cause or the source of the fatal life-taking disease called the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, popularly known as AIDS. In fact, the people between 25 to 45 years of age are the ones who are most susceptible to the HIV virus attack, which targets the immune structure and finally destroys it, thereby causing AIDS. To put it simply, AIDS is the ultimate phase of the HIV virus.

What are the Symptoms of HIV?

One must be very careful because the initial symptoms of HIV are almost similar to those of regular cold and flu. They could even resemble the symptoms of infections like hepatitis or may be some of the diseases transmitted through sexual contact. What is more, the symptoms of HIV may be pronounced in some and dormant in others. Whatever may be the case, the most common symptoms of HIV are fever and tiredness. Headache, skin irritations and rashes, throat pain as well as bloated lymph nodes are also considered to be some of the regular HIV symptoms.

Drug Addiction or Disease

Drug AddictionDrug Addiction for some refers to a disease while many believe that it is just a matter of will or choice. We take addiction to be learned behaviour. However the contemporary science has tried to shed light on the pathological background of the addiction, giving a new thought to the world. It suggests that like another disease, it is a brain disease that develops over time. Repeatedly using drugs brings certain fundament structural and functional changes in the brain that continue long even after the individual stops using them.

The evidence suggests that these long-lasting brain changes are responsible for the distortions of cognitive and emotional functioning that characterize addicts. It is as if drugs control the brain’s natural motivational control circuits, resulting in drug use becoming the sole, or at least the top, priority for the individual.

There is much public debate on this brain-based view of addiction as some people wrongly think that it somehow releases the addicts from responsibility point of view, for their own behaviour. However in spite of this belief, the biological and behavioural explanations are not only an alternative way to understand this phenomenon, they are in fact an incorporate part of the whole picture.

Georgia loses major water ruling

WASHINGTON - A federal appeals court on Tuesday threw out an agreement that Georgia reached with the Army Corps of Engineers for water rights to a major federal reservoir outside Atlanta, handing Alabama and Florida a major victory in the states' long-standing water wars.

The ruling comes amid tense negotiations among the states' governors over water sharing during a record drought.

The 2003 agreement with the Corps would give Georgia about a quarter of Lake Lanier's capacity over the coming decades and is the foundation of Georgia's long-term plans for supplying drinking water to the rapidly growing Atlanta region.

Alabama and Florida challenged the pact, arguing that Georgia doesn't have any legal right to the federal reservoir, which was initially built for hydropower. The withdrawals would dry up river flows into their states that support smaller municipalities, power plants, commercial fisheries and industrial users like paper mills.
